New Year's Eve is known as the time of new beginnings. It's a time to forget one's mistakes and instead focus on "replenishment." It's a fresh start. For example, everyone makes resolutions. Some people go to church and pray for renewed relationships with God. Others vow to make positive changes in their own personal lives; such as losing weight or vanquishing bad habits. Yet for some strange reason, as the clock strikes midnight, people go crazy, get drunk, destroy furniture, pass out on other people's bed, and then wake up the next morning snuggled up against a creepy bearded manly woman named Helga. ... Sounds like a good start towards replenishment.

Anyone see the irony? Every year, millions of people want a New Year's Eve that they'll never forget, but they drink so much that they can't remember it. It's pathetic, but I'm not complaining. Unlike other holidays, this one is my guilty pleasure. Most people celebrate Christmas with relatives, but New Year's Eve is a chance to celebrate with people you actually enjoy celebrating with. (Mom is SO going to murder me).

With regards to the festivities, America has some bizarre rituals. Once a year, we all gather around to beat the crap out of pots and pans, blow things up in the sky, and watch a giant ball descend. Really? Watch balls drop? I mean honestly, raise your hand if you enjoy watching puberty! ... Ugh, Mom, put your hand down. (Mom is SO going to perform a voodoo ritual that brings me back from the dead and then SO clean my dirty mouth out with soap and then SO murder me again).

I was thinking about making a New Year's resolution myself, but I thought, "What the heck -- why tamper with perfection?" Instead, I'll just wish you all the best of times. I hope you remember me in the morning!
